{"id":2382,"date":"2021-06-18T13:59:23","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T03:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.australiancoachingcollective.com.au\/?p=2382"},"modified":"2021-08-24T10:00:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T00:00:14","slug":"how-to-increase-productivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.australiancoachingcollective.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/06\/18\/how-to-increase-productivity\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Increase Productivity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was coaching one of my clients, thinking about the challenge they faced in their business and\u2026 a serendipitous moment happened. I discovered the \u2018Four P\u2019s Matrix\u2019. It was all about them being able to work out all the things they wanted to do in the business and in their life and finding a way to effectively prioritise them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many good ideas, the Four P\u2019s Matrix &#8211; which now forms one of the cornerstones of my coaching &#8211; occurred to me unexpectedly, and almost by accident. It occurred to me that if we could find a way to physically express this and delineate what fitted where, and where the main business priorities lay, we would have a workable tool to help my client to allocate their time more effectively in more profitable areas and make better business decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have used scaling models in the past.&nbsp; For example, on a scale of 1 to 10, and looking at all the things you want to do, you write them down independently with a numeric value attached to each.&nbsp; The next stage is to scale the activities interdependently and work out the impacts that they have on each other.&nbsp; That core concept sparked the idea that underpins the Four P\u2019s Matrix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It then occurred to me that if people could understand where they <strong>PRODUCE <\/strong>their profit, and make their money in a business, and scale that as a percentage of their overall available time during the working week, we would have the basis of a very useful business tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRODUCE (70%) <\/strong>is the first of four words that supports the four corners of the Matrix.&nbsp; The others are <strong>PRACtice (15%), Play (10%) <\/strong>and<strong> possible (5%) <\/strong>and the use of capital letters is deliberate since they tell a story and denote levels of importance and significance to the business as well as the business owner. <em>NB \u2013 You can only spend \u2013 100 points as per above.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRODUCE <\/strong>represents the core business &#8230; the main activities, energy and commitments that cover business costs and generate profits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first task for all my clients working through the Four P\u2019s Matrix model is to decide what activities are essential elements of profit generation, and then allocate a percentage of weekly time to those activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, many business owners and stakeholders would agree that at least 65% of their time should be spent on efforts that are closely allied to core business and the generation of profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, if a business owner working week is 50 hours, he should agree with himself and his coach to absolutely commit 35 hours a week on <strong>PRODUCE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRACtice<\/strong> represents non-core activities that could generate wealth over time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, time and effort spent on managing a share portfolio or learning how to day trade FOREX.&nbsp; A typical client might allocate 15% of their time (say 7.5 hours a week) to <strong>PRACtice <\/strong>pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Play <\/strong>&#8211; our client might spend 10% of his time (approximately 5 hours) each week on playing with ideas such as property development or setting up an independent adjunct to the business which might or might not work after the appropriate research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all like to daydream at times and think about what might be <strong>possible<\/strong>.\u00a0 With just 5% of time (2.5 hours) allocated for daydreaming, it is kept well in check.
